A New Identity

“We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy, always thanking the Father. He has enabled you to share in the inheritance that belongs to his people, who live in the light. For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.”(Colossians 1:11-14)

One could interpret Paul’s opening sentences to the Colossians in various ways, but I like to think that Paul is speaking to these believers about their new identity in Christ. In the first few verses, he begins his letter by identifying himself as an apostle of Jesus Christ and by identifying believers as saints and faithful brothers and sisters in Christ, recipients of God the Father’s grace and peace. This is truly good news and an excellent starting point for meditation, prayer, and identity transformation. Not only does Paul want us to know Christ, but he also wants us to understand who we are in Him.

Therefore, it isn't surprising that Paul continually asked God to reveal Himself to those who are saved by the gospel of Jesus Christ. He prayed that God would grant them complete knowledge and spiritual wisdom to understand His will. He prayed for their ongoing growth in knowing God better and for their lives to increasingly bear spiritual fruit. He prayed for their maturity. If these qualities are present in us, we live lives that honor and please the Lord always.

Paul’s message remains as vital to hear, learn, and inwardly digest today as when he first wrote it. Why? Because God rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his Son. We have been redeemed and forgiven. This new identity must be formed within us. With these life-changing truths in mind, may we confidently pray this week’s collect: Let your merciful ears, O Lord, be open to the prayers of your humble servants; and, that we may receive what we ask, teach us by your Holy Spirit to ask only those things that are pleasing to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the same Spirit lives and reigns forever and ever.

The peace of the Lord be with your weekend!
