A Trio of Tempers
Although the world, the flesh, and the devil are powerful adversaries, God provides a way out of all three (1 Corinthians 10:13). These temptations, driven by an onslaught of sights, sounds, and attractions, tempt us to give in, often regardless of the consequences. Meanwhile, our flesh is inherently weak, causing us to do what we don’t intend and failing to do what we truly desire.
Jesus recognized the strong attraction of the world, the flesh, and the devil, so he urges us to stand firm because he has defeated them (John 16:33).
Remember that God is on our side, and His grace is enough for every situation (2 Corinthians 12:9). We can overcome every temptation through His Word (Matthew 4:1-11), and with His armor, we can defeat all schemes of the world, the flesh, and the devil (Ephesians 6:10-18). God’s promise remains as powerful today as when Paul first wrote it: “No test or temptation that comes your way is beyond what others have faced. Just remember that God will never fail you; He won't allow you to be pushed beyond your limits; and He will always be there to help you overcome" (1 Corinthians 10:13, The Message).
Considering this, this week’s collect (prayer) offers a fitting conclusion to today’s devotional: O Lord God, grant your people grace to withstand the temptations of the world, the flesh, and the devil, and with pure hearts and minds to follow you, the only God; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen!
The Lord's peace be with you.
Joe
