Christ the King

The last Sunday in the church year is designated as Christ the King Sunday. The collect for the day reminds us that Jesus is “King of kings and Lord of lords”.  It is good to remind ourselves of this facet of our savior's character. Part of our fallen human nature is to put ourselves on the throne of our life. We want to do what we want when we want to. So did Adam and Eve in the garden. God's authority is absolute and His terms are non-negotiable. When Jesus says that there is only one name by which humans can be saved, he means it. In order to receive the infinite benefits God has for us, we have to come to God on His terms. We have to humble ourselves, step down from our throne, and allow Him to take his rightful place in our lives. Once we have done that, we become citizens of His kingdom and belong to him for all eternity. Even though we will continue to strive to keep Jesus on the throne of our lives, our citizenship will never be revoked. The authority of Jesus our Lord is tempered by His love and mercy.
