Grace To Finish Strong
As many of you know, and many new to the Anglican way are learning, during the first moments of every Sunday worship service we pray a “Collect” (a concise prayer that gathers and focuses our hearts on God’s majesty and eternal qualities). When we pray the collect, whether the weekly one or the Collect for Purity, we follow a pattern that addresses God’s attributes and actions, makes petitions based on them, acknowledges the eternal unity and sovereignty of the Holy Trinity, and concludes with an “Amen.”
Sunday we will pray the following Collect: Almighty and merciful God, it is only by your grace that your faithful people offer you true and laudable service: Grant that we may run without stumbling to obtain your heavenly promises; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
This Collect reminds us that the mercies of Almighty God are new every morning and that His steadfast love never fails. He is the LORD enthroned on high, who stoops down to look at the heavens and the earth, and who raises the poor from the dust and the needy from the ash heap (Psalm 113). He grants beauty for ashes, joy for mourning, and praise for despair (Isaiah 61:3). It also reminds us that all commendable service begins and ends with divine grace. As Paul said, “In him we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28).
As you reflect on this collection, consider the two petitions. The first is for the strength to run without stumbling or abandoning God’s promises. The second is for the ability to run with the purpose of receiving those promises. Both petitions rely entirely on God’s power, mercy, and grace. We can trust that God will answer both because, as our Good Shepherd, he guides us along paths of righteousness for his name’s sake and provides everything we need to finish strong.
Then, notice that this prayer is made through our Lord Jesus, whom Hebrews describes as the Founder and Perfecter of our faith. I love how The Message phrases it: “Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in. Study how he did it. Because he never lost sight of where he was headed—that exhilarating finish in and with God” (Hebrews 12:2).
With that declaration in mind, may we all say, Amen! So be it! We agree!
The Lord’s peace be with your weekend!
Joe
