Rejoice in the Lord with Singing!
ing joyfully to the Lord, you righteous;
it is fitting for the upright to praise him.
Praise the Lord with the harp;
make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.
Sing to him a new song;
play skillfully, and shout for joy.
For the word of the Lord is right and true;
he is faithful in all he does.
The Lord loves righteousness and justice;
the earth is full of his unfailing love. (PSALM 33:1-5)
How much time do we dedicate to singing to the Lord? In this psalm, the anonymous author urges us to rejoice in the Lord with singing and musical instruments. You may wonder, “Why does he begin there?” Because the psalmist intends to remind us that the Lord’s word is both right and true, that He is faithful in all His ways, and that His unfailing love fills the earth (verses 4-5).
The word the psalmist uses for “unfailing love” in Hebrew is “hesed,” a word of great importance in the Old Testament. Central to God’s character, “hesed” represents an expression of kindness, love, and mercy, as illustrated in Psalm 100:5: “For the LORD is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.” As a result, the redeemed are called to “give thanks to the LORD, [because] he is good; his steadfast love endures forever!” (Psalm 107:1) Indeed, the Lord shows compassion with everlasting love (Isaiah 54:8).
Keeping this in mind, I encourage you to set aside time today (and even tomorrow, Sunday, and beyond) to worship the Lord through singing. While the Lord does not coerce us into worship, He invites us to do so because of who He is and the wonders He has accomplished. As you worship Him, may you feel His steadfast love anew.
