The Eyes of the Lord are on You
“I sought the Lord, and he answered me and rescued me from all my fears.
Those who look to him are radiant with joy; their faces will never be ashamed.
This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him and saved him from all his troubles.
The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and rescues them.
The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their cry for help.
The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, and rescues them from all their troubles.
The Lord is near the brokenhearted; he saves those crushed in spirit.
Many adversities come to the one who is righteous, but the Lord rescues him from them all." (PSALM 34:4-7, 15a, 17-19, CSB)
If you open your Bible to Psalm 34, you will find a heading that reads something like this: “Concerning David, when he pretended to be insane in the presence of Abimelech [a reference to Achish, the king of Gath], who drove him out, and he departed." To read the biblical account that inspired David to write Psalm 34, you can find it in 1 Samuel 21:10-15. It’s a colorful story highlighting David’s absurd behavior and narrow escape from a Philistine king named Achish.
Although much can be said about Psalm 34, I will keep my comments focused on the above verses, which are rich with encouragement because they testify to God's power and loving-kindness. He listens earnestly to our prayers and generously blesses us with good things. No request is too great. In fact, we often ask God for far too little rather than asking Him for too much. We lack because we do not ask (James 4:2). We need to pray more powerful prayers. By this, I do not mean lengthy or loud prayers. Instead, I mean that we need to pray with faith (even faith as small as a mustard seed) for significant and everyday things because Jesus instructed us to pray this way (John 14:12).
That said, you might need forgiveness, protection, or peace of mind. Psalm 34 invites you to ask God for these blessings. On the other hand, your needs may feel overwhelming, leaving you uncertain whether God will truly help, or they might seem so small that you hesitate to approach Him. Once again, Psalm 34 encourages you to share your needs with your Heavenly Father. He is listening and ready to respond. Not only are His eyes on you, but the Lord Jesus Christ also intercedes on your behalf (Hebrews 7:25). So, let us follow David, who experienced the goodness of the Lord as he dared to bring all his needs to Him!
