Without Faith

"Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see… And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him" (Hebrews 11:1, 6).

Every day I am reminded of two important truths about living a Christian life. First, it is lived by faith. Thankfully, faith as small as a mustard seed is enough! Second, we are loved by a caring God who rewards those who trust Him.

What exactly does that mean? For me, it’s a continuous reminder that I am, in many ways, a control freak. I prefer things to be ordered, systematic, and textbook-like, but I often find that God’s ways are not my ways. It seems He cares far less whether I have or understand the big picture or specific details. Even though I see most things through a keyhole, God calls me to trust Him in all things, big and small.

The longer I live, the more I realize I don’t have clear answers to difficult questions or understand many things happening around me. But as I grow older, that bothers me less because I know all people who walk with God are called to live by faith. God is sovereign and faithful, even when it doesn’t seem like it.

If you ever feel this way, you’re not alone. I believe Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the other believers listed in Hebrews 11 shared similar feelings. So today, may we find encouragement in King David’s wise words: “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).

The Lord's peace be with you.
